“A true moment trumps everything. If the moment is pure, we can overlook sloppy composition or poor lighting. Moments are the most important thing we capture as artists and are the most difficult to frame.” ~ Candice C. Cusic
Hi! I’m Candice, and I’m a Chicago-based photojournalist by training and visual storyteller at heart. I honestly can’t remember not using a camera to tell a story, and I started photographing at age four with a toy camera and by age six I had adopted my father’s Minolta SLR (which I still own). Basically, I’ve been a photo geek my whole life!
I’ve worked as a photojournalist for 20 years for some of the largest publications in the country, including the Chicago Tribune for 11 years, and have taught photojournalism at Northwestern University for over a decade. As a staff photojournalist with the Chicago Tribune, I was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Photography has always been my passion, and I am so honored to be recognized for what I love to do.
I specialize in photographing unforgettable moments in weddings and, in 2015, I created the Moment-Driven Photojournalism Workshop to teach other photographers how to capture moments in portrait sessions, step outside their comfort zones and boost their confidence.
The Moment-Driven Workshop is an intimate shooting experience that will teach you how to tell a story, what to look for before hitting the shutter and push you beyond what you normally capture. We have taken this workshop to London twice and offer it twice a year in beautiful downtown Chicago.
For those of you who prefer to work privately with me, I’ve created Mentor Sessions. Read all the details here.
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming workshop, conference, mentor session. If you have any questions, please contact me, or book a free strategy session if you want to see if the Moment-Driven Photojournalism Workshop is the right fit for you.
